The
solid tree, refusing to bend,
eventually breaks.
Resilience
is a powerful tipping
point for change and
transformation. It
transforms the challenges
of burn out, complexity
and conflict into
opportunities.
Your
resilience quotient
determines your ability to
spring back or rebound
from adversity. It
has a powerful impact on
everything you do and what
happens as a result.
Resilience brings you back
to here and now --- ready
to meet what is
coming. It empowers
and supports you in being
versatile and creative.
Resilience also
rejuvenates your
neuro-muscular plasticity,
which helps you get
unstuck from old habits.
Resilience cannot be
acquired with just the
will and skill of your
head. Your capacity
to bounce back, again and
again, requires all of
you. Your clarity. Your
drive. Your
skill. Your
heart. Your
muscles. Your
energies. It is
truly a whole person
affair.
We
are going to explore this
often-undervalued
competency in a somewhat
unusual way. We will
go underneath our usual
stories to work directly
with the natural
strategies that sustain
it.
First, here is a 5-minute
movie introduction to our
view of resilience that
also contains a simple
test for your "Resilience
Quotient".

EXERCISES FOR
THE FOUR PHASES OF
RESILIENCE
The
response that we call
"resilience" can be
understood as a four-phase
movement process.
For each phase, you will

valuable competencies.

Competencies
Often, your
capacity for becoming resilient
can be blocked by how
you deal with Fear,
Anger and/or Anxiety.
Through your visceral
acceptance of these states,
the energy of decisiveness
can offer you its boundless
strength.
Your
resilience can
be sabotaged in
Phase 1 if you
are holding a
mind-set that is
not prepared for
or rejects
bending.

FEEL WHAT YOU SEE
Cultivating
your capacity to be moved by what
you see
The
eye
is the instrument of
sight. Through the
muscles and the
nerves, it
influences and is
influenced by the
whole body.
We are so
used to separating our
senses one from the
other that we do not
feel what we see, taste
what we hear, or smell
what we
feel.
Our senses are channels.
Are they open? Are they
connected? Do they
distort reality, or do
they convey its
fundamental truths?
Here is a
6.5 minute movie with a set
of visual – visceral
exercises. The essence
of them is simple. In
order to make a difference,
you must first be able to
tell the difference.

It is easy
to stop the changes.
It becomes easy with
practice to allow
the changes.
The founders of the
ancient traditions did
not learn from books.
They learned the
deeper truths of the
universe through
observing and
participating in the
changes of their
bodily instruments.
Whatever happens
within you as you
feelingly observe a
symbol or event is
crucial to your
understanding of
it. There is no
end to understanding.
There is no end to
feeling.
Try the practice
again... and again...
and again...
There is no end to
being moved by life.
NOTICE,
TOUCH, ACCEPT, RELEASE
Strengthen
the inner rhythm that sustains
your resilient heart-and-mind.
There
are some things
that can simply
be released
because you
command
it.
However, this
does not work
for the really
important, deep
and old feelings
or
energies.
This practice is
based on
classical
meditation
techniques for
touching and
accepting so
that release
happens.

ASSUME THE SHAPE
Every
feeling has its unique muscular
shape.
Warm
Up Exercise
Imitate the above feeling
shapes.
Notice how they alter your state
of mind and heart.
Notice which ones are familiar
and which are unfamiliar.
The Empathy
Practice
Either by
watching, listening or
remembering someone, let
yourself step into the
shape that seems to fit
them.
Let the muscular changes
influence your inner
conversation, emotional
state and your desire to
act.
What do you
now know about this
person?
Breathe and
unbend yourself and
return to your own
shape.
SELF-ASSURANCE
Self-assurance
is often defined as:
freedom from doubt, belief
in yourself and your
abilities, certainty,
confidence and authority.
A corresponding non-verbal
quality is found in the
movements of a master
martial artist and the
actions of a surgeon.
If we were to put words on
this mind-set, we could say,
"Yes, I am ready!"
Here is a practice that will
assist you to grow your
self-assurance from the
inside-out, by the
particular order your
attention fills out your
skin.
The
Step-by-Step Method
Say to yourself,
I have
legs and feet.
I
have a spine and head.
I
have arms and hands.
My
breath fills my lower back.
AND I AM
READY!

The
Poem of the Practice
Just Do It!
My
spine is rooted in the earth like
a tree.
My
trunk and my branches are strong
and flexible.
My
power grows in strength with each
breath.
Just Do It!
TRANSFORMING
HEAVINESS
Sometimes
it feels like there is no
end to down. It is as
though there is no limit to
how low you can go, how
heavy you can feel.
Down seems to go down
forever.
We know from very real
experience that fighting
doesn't work, giving in or
giving up doesn't work and
struggling to pretend
definitely doesn't
work. This kind of
depressive feeling belongs
to the Ground Family.
Here is a practice that uses
a primitive reflex to
release our inherent power
to be lifted up - from
beneath - without using our
willpower and desire to make
it so.
